The credit bureaus record all kinds of credit related activities on your credit report(s), and the negative items such as late payments, default loans, bankruptcy, foreclosure, among other things will lower your calculated credit score.

From what I know, raising your credit score may take some effort of demonstrating better credit-worthiness for a period of time. If however, a mistake on the credit report is causing your credit score to be low, then you can try to contest that with the bureaus and if you can prove that it was a mistake or due to identity theft, etc., then it's very likely that you can get the negative items removed, and your credit score will quickly rise. Hope that helps.
