Unless you're the victim of identity theft, any credit monitoring service is a complete waste of money!

You can monitor your own credit by spacing out your free credit reports from the three credit bureaus (one bureau every 4 months).

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com to get you free credit reports. It's the only site where you won't have to sign up for monitoring. You will have to pay for credit scores, if you want those.

Why do you want to get credit monitoring?

Are you planning to get a mortgage or other large loan within the next year and you want to be sure of what's on your credit report? If you're not planning to buy a house (or Corvette) soon, you may not need to track it that closely.

Or are you doing it for identity theft protection? Some identity theft protection plans include credit monitoring too:

Costco usually is a good company to deal with. I've never used their monitoring services, but have used them for other things.
